According to Webster’s Dictionary motivation can be defined as, “having a strong reason to act or accomplish something.” What makes motivation special, though, is the reason that drives each individual to put their thoughts into action. So I wanted to frame this blog around one big question: What motivates you?

Each and everyday, we have the choice to go through the motions just like any other day and remain the same, or we can get up, be the best possible version of ourselves, and do what sets our souls on fire. The key difference between those two choices is having something that motivates you and makes you want to do more. Everyone’s motivation should (and will) be a little different than the next… that’s what makes it so special, but you need to know what motivates you in order to use it to help guide you in the right direction.

Before anything else, my wife is one of my biggest motivators. Everyday, she is in the back of my mind guiding me through everything I do. I want her to have a happy and healthy life with me, and I am motivated to do what I can to provide that for her. Happy wife happy life, right?

My second motivation is to Elite Custom Fitness and the family we have created here. I have a strong passion and motivation to continue making Elite Custom Fitness the best place to train in Pittsburgh. A big piece of that is practicing what I preach. Training and living a healthy life is extremely important as a gym owner and trainer, not only for yourself but for your clients. How would it look if you walked into a gym and the owner was completely out of shape and didn’t train? In my opinion, it wouldn’t look great. It is extremely important to me to remain consistent with training and nutrition as a way to reinforce the importance of that to my clients. So overall, I am motivated to show each person that walks through the doors that movement, being active, and eating heather is essential to have in your life.

I admit, I am naturally a very self-motivated person, but it definitely helps to have two pretty outstanding reasons to work hard to succeed in life and work. Not everyone has figured out reasons that could help motivate them, though. A big piece of what I do at Elite Custom Fitness is helping people find a motivation to train and live a healthy life. People don’t realize that getting that in check first is the most important piece of training and making a change to what you’re doing. If people are not motivated, then they do not stick to a routine and people will quit. As a result, Elite Custom Fitness wouldn’t last.

So, I want to provide everyone who is feeling less than motivated with a little exercise that can help you determine what motivates you and how to use that to drive you to make a change. This would be a great first step for anyone that hasn’t quite figured out the “who”, “what”, or ultimately “why” that motivates them. So enough talking about it, grab a pencil and paper, and let’s fucking do it (‘cause that’s what motivation is all about, right?):

Answer each of the following questions honestly.

  1. What is making you feel unmotivated right now (i.e. laying around, weight gain, lack of success at work, loss of something/someone, change in something you are used to doing)?

  2. When you are feeling the best about yourself, what are you doing?

  3. How are you going to (or how could you) make time for the things that make you happy on a daily basis?

  4. Do you have resources to help you or do you need extra direction when it comes to training and nutrition? If so, what can I do to help more?

Looking at your answers, all of the things you listed for the first question are going to be barriers toward you feeling better about yourself, but they also have the power to motivate you to make a change (physically or mentally). Instead of using those things as excuses, use them to push you forward. All of the things you listed for the second question should be things that you should be doing more often. Make time for those things (third question). For example, if you truly love to train and love to come to the gym, you should be there every day that you can. It’s not going to be easy, but “nothing in the world worth having comes easy”... it’s all about the choices you make (not the excuses).

Maybe your mind is focused, but you don’t know where to start to being making changes (fourth question). Having the right resources is extremely important. Elite Custom Fitness is here to provide you all of the support you need (physically and mentally) to stay focused and motivated. We have such a variety of equipment that you could do something different each day, with our guidance and support! We’ll never turn you away. The first step, though, is recognizing the things that motivate you and the steps you need to take to start doing more of what makes you happy and what keeps you motivated to be the best you can be. Just know that we are ready and waiting to help get you there!
